Surefire Metsulfuron 600WG Herbicide SUREFIRE-METSULFURON PCT

Description

Surefire Metsulfuron 600WG Herbicide

Active Ingredient: Metsulfuron-Methyl @ 600g/kg

Similar Or Comparable To Brush-Off (Dupont), Ally (Dupont), Associate (Nufarm), Militia Metsulfuron 600 WG Herbicide (Axichem) & Ozcrop Metsulfuron 600WG (OzCrop)

Surefire  Metsulfuron Methyl 600WG Herbicide is used for the control of certain broadleaf weeds in winter cereal crops and broadleaf weeds and brush species (woody weeds) in pastures, rights of way, commercial and industrial areas as per the Directions For Use table.

  • Surefire Metsulfuron Methyl is a residual sulfonylurea compound, used as a selective pre and postemergence herbicide for broadleaf weeds and some annual grasses. It is a systemic compound with foliar and soil activity, and it works rapidly after it is taken up by the plant. Its mode of action is by inhibiting cell division in the shoots and roots of the plant, and it is biologically active at low use rates. It is very effective on weeds that include bulbs or tubers.
  • Surefire Metsulfuron Methyl is commonly used in broadacre farming, woody weed & brush control and forestry situations. It is usually used together with other herbicides that control the weeds not susceptible to metsulfuron. Metsulfuron-methyl also controls susceptible weeds in cereals, where selectivity is due to rapid metabolism within the cereal plants.

Brush Control:

  • Surefire Metsulfuron Methyl 600 controls more than 40 different species of brush, broadleaf and bulbous weeds. Mixed infestations of hard to control woody weeds, including Lantana, Gorse, Bracken, Tree-of-Heaven and Blackberry, are also easily controlled with one pass.
  • Surefire Metsulfuron Methyl 600 also controls nuisance pasture weeds, including Doublegee, Erodium, Sorrel, Onion grass and Paterson’s Curse, & many more.
  • For a full table of weeds controlled, refer to the directions of use.

Broad Acre:

  • Surefire Metsulfuron Methyl 600 is a highly selective herbicide for the control of many broadleaf weeds in winter cereals. It can be applied any time from the three-leaf stage of the crop – when the weeds are young and actively growing – to before booting.
  • Surefire Metsulfuron Methyl 600 is compatible with a wide range of grass and broadleaf herbicides, making weed control even more cost-effective with the one-pass application.

The 11 gram measuring spoon is enough for 2 hectares, that’s right .. 20,000 m2….Most users with a 10 litre sprayer would only require an unmeasurable 0.05grams over 100m2 to avoid killing surrounding desirable trees and shrubs…Even a tiny1.3 gram measuring spoon used in a similar product is still too big….Get the picture? This product is so insanely concentrated requiring the miniscule amount,…any more risking a lot of damage to neighbouring vegetation…

Hi Paul, and thanks for your review of the Surefire Metsulfuron 600WG Herbicide. As you know from reading the products label, Metsulfuron-Methyl is not registered or recommended for domestic use in garden situations. It is a concentrated herbicide that is designed to kill various broadleaf species, including trees & woody weeds. In your garden, these species include trees, hedges, roses and shrubs, to name a few. Metsulfuron can move through the soil into a shallow-rooted plant/tree root system, causing severe damage or death to the plant. Spray-drift will have similar results. If you choose to use Metsulfuron ‘off-label’, then you also choose to take the risk of poisoning non-target species. The measuring spoon is designed for mixing the herbicide in minimum 100L capacity spray tanks, not garden sprayers.

Metsulfuron 600WG Herbicide is not registered or recommended to control Biddy Bush (Sifton Bush). Herbicides such as Grazon Extra, Hatchet, Scrubba, Woody Extra and Trodon 75D are more suitable. Metsulfuron 600WG Herbicide is registered to be effective on St. John's Wort when mixed with Glyphosate. Herbicides like Grazon Extra, equivalents to Grazon DS (Hatchet & Scrubba), Starane and Ester are more suitable for St. John's Wort control.

Surefire Metsulfuron Methyl 600 WG Herbicide is a selective herbicide used to control certain broadleaf weeds in winter cereal crops and broadleaf weeds and brush species (woody weeds) in pastures, rights of way, commercial and industrial areas. Metsulfuron 600WG Herbicide kills many broadleaf plants but is not registered to control Angel's tears (Soleirolia soleirolii) and is not registered or recommended for use in any domestic turf or garden situation, and to do so is at your own risk. N.B. buffalo lawn is a broadleaf species and may suffer severe damage or death if Metsulfuron is applied.

Metsulfuron 600WG Herbicide can kill or severely damage shrubs and trees, including gums (also broadleaf species). Metsulfuron will be leached into the soil after rainfall and remain in the ground for a time. If a tree's root system comes in contact with the Metsulfuron, it can be translocated throughout the tree. Depending on the application rate and the size of the tree, the result may be the tree's death or severe damage. To our knowledge, no selective herbicides are registered or recommended to control Angel's tears.

Surefire Metsulfuron 600WG Herbicide is a water-dispersable granule (WDG). Hence the granules are formulated to be dissolved in water at the recommended rates indicated in the 'directions for use' label. They are not broadcast in their granular form. Metsulfuron tank mixes can be applied by 'hand spray', 'boom', or 'gas gun'. Always read the 'directions for use' carefully to ensure suitability to your situation. This can be found on the Surefire Metsulfuron product screen; scroll down to the heading 'SDS & Technical' and select; a PDF file will be available to print or download.

    Answered by the admin

Although Surefire Metsulfuron 600WG Herbicide registered 'directions for use' does not list rainforest tree species, they are classified as broadleaf plants and are likely to be susceptible to the Metsulfuron-Methyl. When applying metsulfuron-methyl, there is a risk of root uptake of non-target species due to its mobility potential, which is affected by environmental factors, soil profiles, temperatures and rainfall. The half-life of metsulfuron-methyl ranges from 14 to 180 days, with a typical time of 30 days. Metsulfuron-Methyl is broken down in the soil mainly by chemical hydrolysis and, to a lesser degree, by soil microbes. Other factors which affect breakdown are soil pH, soil moisture and temperature. Research indicates it is faster in warm, wet, and acidic soils and slowest in alkaline, cold, and dry soils.

Metsulfuron is one of the few herbicides used to successfully remove Singapore daisies in areas of native vegetation and non-crop areas. This is done as per the APVMA Permit # 9907. As Metsulfuron will not list Zoysia (or any turf species) as a safe use situation, conducting a small off-label trial in a secluded area would be necessary.

Surefire Metsulfuron 600WG Herbicide is not registered for or claims to control the weeds you listed.  However, they are classified as broadleaf plants, likely to be susceptible to the Metsulfuron-Methyl.  We suggest mixing a 2nd broadleaf herbicide with the Metsulfuron to spike the mix and give you better results.  A herbicide such as 24D Amine or Grazon Extra would be recommended for this purpose, plus a suitable wetting agent or penetrant.

Carrot weed, also known as annual ragweed, ambrosia, American wormwood, carrot weed, hay fever weed, hogweed or common ragweed, is not registered to be controlled by Metsulfuron 600WG Herbicide.  Carrot weed is susceptible to other selective broadleaf herbicides such as Dicamba M and Dicamba 500, so Metsulfuron will likely have some control, but as it is not registered for this purpose, a test or trial should be undertaken first, as with any 'off-label' use.  We do not recommend using Metsulfuron 600WG Herbicide in domestic or turf situations.

The use of Metsulfuron 600WG Herbicide for Singapore Daisy control is registered for use under a permit by the APVMA and hence is not listed on the product labels.  As Metsulfuron 600WG Herbicide is a slow-acting herbicide, we recommend waiting at least 2-3 weeks after application before mowing or cutting the grass.  If you get a quicker kill of the Singapore Daisy and are confident the chemical has translocated into the root system, then mowing can occur sooner.

Answered by the admin Do not apply metsulfuron-methyl to buffalo grass.  Metsulfuron is used to target and kill mainly broadleaf species of plants.  Buffalo grass is a broadleaf species.  We would suggest you look at a product such as Surefire Buffalo, Bindi & Broadleaf Weedkiller specifically for use in buffalo grass.

Tips For Use

Restraints (Brush Applications):

  • Do not spray if rainfall is expected within 4 hours. Do not store the prepared spray for more than 2 days.
  • Do not store tank mixes with other products.
  • Do not apply to pastures based on paspalum notatum or setaria spp. As their vegetative growth will be reduced.
  • Do not treat newly sown pastures as severe damage may occur.
  • Do not use on pasture seed crops.

Use of Surfactant/ Wetting Agent:

  • Metsulfuron 600 WG herbicide alone – it is important that a penetrant, surfactant or wetting agent is always used with this product. If no specific wetting agent/ surfactant is recommended in the directions for use table use a non-ionic surfactant (100%) at 100ml/ 100l of final spray volume.
  • Metsulfuron 600 WG Herbicide tank mixed with Glyphosate – Use a non-ionic surfactant when mixing with glyphosate herbicide. In some tank mix situations the use of an organosilicone penetrant (eg Pulse, Eurochem Penetrant, Probe or Saturate) is recommended. This recommendation must be strictly followed in order to achieve adequate weed control.
  • Gas gun applications – An organosilicone penetrant (eg Pulse, Eurochem Penetrant, Probe or Saturate) should be added at the rate of 10mL/ 5L or 200mL/100L of final spray volume.
  • Where a mineral spray oil is recommended use 1L/100L of final spray volume (ie 1% volume/volume). A non-ionic surfactant should still be used with this mixture.
  • Always read the instructions on the companion product label when tank mixing.

Compatibility:

This product is compatible with glyphosate formulations and commonly used pasture & broadacre herbicides such as MCPA Amine, MCPA Ester, 2,4-D Amine, Dicamba, Clopyralid (Lontrel), Fluroxypyr (Starane), and commonly used insecticides such as chlorpyrifos and omethoate. Always refer to the companion product label for instructions/ restrictions.

Ecological and Environmental Effects:

  • Metsulfuron-Methyl has a low toxicity to birds, aquatic organisms (including fish), bees and earthworms.
  • The breakdown of metsulfuron-methyl in soils is largely dependent on soil temperature, moisture content, and pH.(acidity / alkalinity) The chemical will degrade faster under acidic conditions, and in soils with higher moisture content and higher temperature. The chemical has a higher mobility potential in alkaline soils, due to its higher solubility.
  • Metsulfuron-methyl is stable to photolysis, but will break down in ultraviolet light. It is also stable to hydrolysis in neutral and alkaline conditions.
  • Metsulfuron-methyl is rapidly taken up by plants at the roots and on foliage. The chemical is translocated throughout the plant, but is not persistent. In tolerant plants, it is broken down to non-herbicidal products.

Safety Directions:

  • Harmful if swallowed.
  • Will irritate the eyes and skin.
  • Avoid contact with eyes and skin.
  • When opening the container and preparing spray, wear elbow-length PVC gloves and goggles.
  • If applying by hand wear cotton overalls, over normal clothing, buttoned to the neck and wrist and a washable hat and elbow length PVC gloves.
  • If product on skin, immediately wash area with soap and water.
  • If product in eyes, wash out immediately with water.
  • Wash hands after use.
  • After each day’s use, wash gloves, goggles and contaminated clothing.

Protection of Livestock:

  • There is a nil withholding period for this product and stock may continue to graze where the product has been used in pasture situations.
  • It is recommended that stock are removed from the pasture for about 3 days to ensure product efficacy.
  • Certain plants such as bracken are naturally toxic to stock.
  • When toxic plants are present, it is recommended that grazing be delayed until complete browning of treated plants has occurred.

First Aid:

  • If poisoning occurs contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre. Phone Australia 131 126.
  • For further information, refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
